Evelyn Brown- Funeral services were held on Thursday July 21, 2016, at 12 noon, at the Second Baptist Church, in Alliance, Ohio, for Mrs. Evelyn Brown, 86, Alliance, who departed this life on Friday, July 15,2016, at Community Care Center following an extended illness. Evelyn was born May 15, 1930, in Tifton, Ga., she was a resident of Alliance for more than 50 years. She was married to the late Macon Brown and was a member of Second Baptist Church. During her life, Evelyn was employed as a nurse aide at Alliance Community Hospital, a mini bus driver at Balog Cab Co., a city school bus driver, a cafeteria aide at Morgan Elementary School and owned and operated a wig and record shops. She was very involved in her community and was the founder of Evelyn Spiritual Hour broadcast on Mount Union's WRMU 91.1 FM, begining in 1970. She was a founder of The Christian Mission Fellowship; organized the Evelyn Christian Singles Club; was a member of the Democratic party, serving as treasurer on on the Executive Board; and served on city council as the first minority councilwoman. She supported Counclilman Wilson Stump in changing Morgan Street on way between East Summit and Garwood. She served on the Mental of Health Board, Park and Recreation Board and board of the Stark County African American Historical and Cultural Museum Project; organized a Toys for Tots drive for kids; chaired banquets in honor of Councilman Curvis Rhyme and Barbara Nicholson; the first minority on Alliance School Board; and co-chaired the first NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet of Alliance. Evelyn was a past member of American Legion Post 791, serving as chaplain; second vice president of the Haines House Underground Railroad Project; president of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Steering Committee, organizing the annual MLK Parade and a member of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Civic Committee. She was instrumental in changing North and South Liberty Avenue to Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and the viaduct to Dr, Martin Luther King Viaduct. Evelyn was a retired black history column writer for the Alliance Review, and was a poetry and play writer. She was listed in Who's Who in black America and was inducted into the YWCA Wall of Fame and the Stark County NAACP Black History Hall of Fame. A former member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, she served as president of the Senior Mission and president of the Ways and Means Committee. She enjoyed playing games, cooking BBQ ribs, decorating and watching television. She was survived by her nephews, Willie C. (Ann) McCray of Pearson, GA., and Cecil (Emma) Jefferson of Alliance; nieces, Mary Jefferson of Alliance, Cora Jeferson of Alliamce, Susie Jefferson of Dallas, TX., Donna Jefferson of Pearson,GA., Cynthia Simmons of PA., Merrian Harris of Atlanta, Ora Ford of Alliance, and Zondria Heard of Alliance; and a host of cousins and church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother; Artie C. McCray; sister-in-law, Mary Lee McCray, and sister Willie Dee.
